Language is the glue that holds our culture together: family, work, even thoughts and dreams are built on words, books, and conversations. It is strange, then, that we are not even conscious of using language and are often surprised by it. Now you can explore all the complexities and nuances of language in the Your Dictionary libraries, such as the one below, or by playing games with words and phrases here in the game room. Nothing is more playfully human or humanly playful as language.

Word games are generally engaged as a source of entertainment, but they have been found to serve a very useful and progressive educational purpose as well. For instance, young children can find enjoyment playing modestly competitive games such as Hangman, while naturally developing important language skills like spelling. Solving crossword puzzles, which requires familiarity with a larger vocabulary, is a pastime that mature adults have long credited with keeping their minds sharp.

Most word games and puzzles require, as ingredients of success, swiftness of thought, a well-developed vocabulary, and excellent general language skills, including comprehension and spelling. In turn, these same skills are generally thought to become that much more heightened with continued play.

Types of word games

Wordle - Strategically build words as letters come at you one by one. Use your cheats to build the longest and highest scoring words you can.

HangMind - This is similar to the classic game of Hangman, except in this game you are trying to fill in an entire sentence instead of just a word or phrase. Strategically use vowel/consonant cheats, letter reveals and other guessing options to figure out the sentence puzzle.
